Corruption allegations: PHC issues notices to provincial secretaries

Opposition members say govt is giving money to unelected party workers.

PESHAWAR:
The Peshawar High Court (PHC) issued show-cause notices to the chief minister’s principal secretary and the secretary for planning and development on allocation of funds to members of the opposition.

The court has sought a reply as to why the opposition members of the provincial assembly have not been allocated funds according to the prescribed rules.

The petitioners include provincial ministers Shah Hussain, Parvez Khattak and Attiqur Rehman, who complained that the provincial government was distributing developmental funds among the activists of the ruling party in their constituencies.

The opposition members contended that the provincial government was issuing funds to unelected party members rather than to the elected ones to win votes in the general elections. The bench asked the secretaries to reply as to why the rules are not being followed.

Ban on meat export

In another case, the court advised the provincial chief secretary to devise a strategy on the ban of exporting meat to Afghanistan and hold a meeting within 20 days with all stakeholders to end the issue.

A division bench headed by PHC Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth gave the decision while hearing a suo-motu notice.

The court had banned exports of poultry and cattle to Afghanistan after exceeding the fixed quota.

During the case hearing on Tuesday, the bench was informed by commissioner of the Pakistan animal husbandry department that there is no shortage of meat and poultry products in the country.
