UNSC to hold emergency session on Gaza airstrikes

UN to meet with representatives of Israeli and Palestinian missions in a closed meeting.

Afp November 15, 2012

UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council will meet in emergency session late Wednesday to discuss escalating tensions between Israel and the Palestinian territory of Gaza, diplomats said.

The closed meeting will start late on Wednesday in New York with representatives from the Israeli and Palestinian missions, diplomats said.

Egypt had urged a Security Council meeting after Israel carried out more than 20 air strikes and sea artillery attacks on Gaza, killing the military commander for Hamas, which controls the territory.

The Palestinian UN envoy said at least nine people were killed on Wednesday.

Tensions have mounted after Egypt also moved heavy armour and commandoes to the Sinai, close to the Egypt-Israel border. Cairo had also called for an emergency meeting of the UN security council along with the Palestinian Authority.
