Police say that more than five people could be involved.
KARACHI:
Millions of rupees were robbed on Wednesday from a bank in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, near the police station at Shahrah-e-Faisal .
Five armed men reached the National Bank of Pakistan around 9:16am in a silver Toyota Corolla. After snatching weapons from security guards and holding the bank’s employees hostage, they reportedly stole around Rs3.7 million.
This is the 21st bank robbery to take place in Karachi this year while 19 robberies were reported last year. It is also the 3rd bank robbery to occur in the past one and a half month in Gulistan-e-Jauhar. Rs3.6 million were stolen from the Habib Metropolitan Bank on October 14 in which a security guard was also killed and Rs4.5 million were stolen from a Bank Al Habib branch on October 2.
SHO Bashir Khan told The Express Tribune that more individuals, other than the five main suspects, could also be involved in the break in. He said that the robbers were speaking different languages, including Urdu, Sindhi, Pushto and Punjabi.
The Special Investigation Unit chief, SSP Farooq Awan, said that the National Bank of Pakistan does not have CCTV cameras installed and it will be much more difficult to catch robbers without any footage. He also mentioned that the robbers beat up the security guards when they resisted. No case has been registered as yet.
