MULTAN:

Over 471 processions will be taken out in the Multan district during the first 10 days of Muharram. The police have declared 101 places ‘sensitive’ said Anjuman Tahafuz-i- Azadari general secretary Syed Talib Parwaz on Monday.

He said that among the 471 processions, 232 were traditional and another 239 had been licensed. The processions include the popular Ustad and Shagird (Teacher and Pupil) tazias. According to Parwaz, the tazia of ‘Ustad’ was taken out for the first time from Pak Gate in 1825 while the tazia of ‘Shagird’ was first carried out from Khooni-Burj in Multan in 1827. Both tazias have been carried out regularly ever since, he said.

He said that after the tazias were kept at the Imambargahs on the 8th of Muharram and devotees visited them on the 8th and the 9th. Thousands of people attend the rallies led by Khalifa Altaf and Raeesuddin, he added.

Parwaz said 1,633 majalis would be organised during Muharram. He said that 432 of these were Category-A (sensitive).  He said that the council had devised a security plan and made other arrangements after consulting with the district administration.
