The protest was organised by political party Pasban to register their concern regarding the targeted killings of the Shia community – particularly the ulemas and the doctors.
The rally had planned to reach the Governor House to present a resolution, but was stopped at Numaish Chowrangi.
The police refused to let the rally move forward stating that the Governor House lies in the red zone where protests are not allowed. The police resorted to aerial firing and tear gas shelling after negotiations with the protesters failed.
The protesters set tires on fire and also torched a bus.
Incidents of violence and target killing have been on the rise in Karachi but no concrete measures have been taken in this regard.
Taking notice of the worsening law and order situation in Karachi and Hyderabad, the prime minister has directed the provincial government to start targeted operations against the suspects involved.
Sectarian killings are also on the rise in the city, with prominent Shia leader Allama Aftab Ahmed Jaffery - the deputy secretary general of Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) as well as the chief of the Palestine Foundation of Pakistan – being shot dead earlier this week.

Why is the Governor House in a 'Red Zone'? Why cannot protestors go there and lodge protest? Why has not Express Tribune reported that this rally was directly fired upon by the police as a result of which Geo reporter Faraz Haider was martyred?
@sgrr: true! 101% true. now society must have to stop them. but in a how could that be possible in country where people like to make money by fooling other, where every 2nd person is thief or corrupt.
The rise of killing of innocent people is the trademark of SSP, now working with another name and was established interalia to provide support the jehadis/Talibaan too by the uniformed establishment. Since initiation, the organization was busy in assasination of people of other sects of Islam, especially the Shias. We have seen no concrete efforts from any of the government to stop them as this was being patronized by our establishment. Now the organization has become so powerful, that its creator cannot control it, although if wanted. Refer Lal Mosque incident in Islamabad. The organization is continuously supplying HR to Talibaan, through their maderssaas spread in every corner of Pakistan, all established after 1980. Untill the society take some suo motto against theses extremists element, nothing could be become better. One alaraming fact is that, now the masses are also feeling sympathy for this organization, due to its unchecked propaganda throughout Pakistan and work force spread throuhout Pakistan. These are turning, our whole society into extremits society where only Tallibaan mind set will live and nothing else. If society does not take suo moto, than there is no hope. Initially it was financed by foreign aid, but now a good portion of our society is financing them, to reach the 'heaven'
Its high time people get some sense! Burning property of others isnt the way to show your anger! Im absalutely against the shia killing and the police really should be stern on the matter but there should be a case registered against these protesters aswell!
The organizers of the rally must tell to the protestors in advance that they cannot go in the Red Zone Area.
There are several Hyde Parks available in Karachi and the protestors instead of going to Red Zone should go to one of the Hyde Parks to register their protest.
Is it the Pasban or the Pasban e Aza? If its the Pasban, its a nice step for them to try lodge protest for the shia brothers. If its Pasban e Aza, ET should report clearly. In any case, the administration has learnt one thing clearly due to one specific shia protest on 1st Jan2012 on Governor House: stop shia rallies before they reach governor house. Lol
