JST demands action to be taken against Chapal Sun City incident
Party threatens to hold province-wide protests if matters are not looked into.
KARACHI:
The Jeay Sindh Tehreek demanded that action must be taken against those involved in the attacks made on camps for flood-survivors at Chapal Sun City on August 23, 2010. Two people were killed and 17 were injured.
The party’s president, Dr Safdar Sarki, said that the police was not taking any action against those who were nominated in the FIR, including Rauf Chappal and SSP Abdullah Shaikh, despite the Supreme Courts’ orders. “We demand that action be taken against these influential people immediately and will organise province-wide protests against the attitude of the police on November 10,” said Sarki.
Two people were killed while 17 others were wounded in firing and tear gas shelling in the flood victims’ camps set up at Chapal Sun City on August 23, 2010. Dr Safdar claimed that the police was pressurised by the ‘builder’ mafia and attacked flood-affected people, including women and children. Ghulam Qambar Soomro and Ayaz Panhwar were killed in the incident.
Sarki said that his party and the victims’ families have gone from the police to the Sindh High Court and then to the Supreme Court of Pakistan to register the FIR.
On October 15, the SC ordered the police to register an FIR according to the wishes of the families. The families said that they are now under threat and are being pressurised to withdraw their statements. He demanded that Shaikh should be removed according to the law and that the police help families in getting justice. “We remained tolerant for last two years but no more.”
