ISLAMABAD:

The Gomal Zam dam will be commissioned in January next year and will generate 17.4 megawatts (MW) of cheap hydel energy, besides irrigating 163,086 acres of land in the Tank and DI Khan districts.

Official sources told the APP here on Wednesday that work on the dam has already been completed and rapid work is being carried out on water channels. They said that the Gomal Zam dam was being built over the Gomal River, which is also one of the significant tributaries of the Indus River. They said the multipurpose project would boost development in remote areas by enhancing irrigation, controlling flash floods and producing electricity.

A 437-feet high dam, a barrage, a 260 kilometres canal network and an electricity generation capacity of 17.4MW are to be gained from the project, they added. It is pertinent to mention here that the dam was initially conceived in 1880, with a view to meet the water needs of DI Khan.
