KARACHI: Pakistan Air Line Pilots’ Association (Palpa) and Institute of Aviation and Management Sciences (PIAMS) Chairman Captain Sohail Baluch said that despite worldwide growth of aviation industry and related businesses, Pakistan’s commercial aviation sector was facing multi-faceted challenges.

He was addressing a seminar organised by Palpa’s Institute of Aviation Sciences, said a press statement on Tuesday.

“The once thriving commercial aviation sector which promised a prosperous future is now reeling in the face of stiff competition from regional and international players, falling revenues and general decline,” he added.

He further said that although the precarious security situation in the country following the 9/11 episode may be cited as the primary reason for this malaise; our failure to keep pace with the latest trends in the aviation world and being unable to adopt sound management strategies in this very important sector is also a contributory factor.

Addressing the seminar, director of Palpa’s Institute of Aviation Sciences, Dr Mir Mohammad Shah said that it is crucial for all stakeholders, including the government, Civil Aviation Authority, operators and passengers, to deliberate upon and play their role for the revival of the commercial aviation industry.

He said that everything from the roles of different stakeholders to policies of the government and behaviours of operators needs to be revisited and lacunas need to be identified and removed.

Speaking on the occasion, PIAMS Dean Dr Wali Mughni said that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in the past few months proved that both operational and financial turnarounds were possible even in the existing scenario. If things were taken towards improvement and challenges were met with efficient planning and prudent actions the commercial aviation industry’s revival will benefit all stakeholders across the board.
