Tanvir eyes national team comeback
Fast-bowler’s success at President’s Trophy impresses PQA coach.

Out-of-favour fast-bowler Tanvir Ahmed is eyeing a comeback to the national team after putting on an impressive show in the ongoing President’s Trophy.
Tanvir, who made his last international appearance in a One-Day International (ODI) against Ireland in May 2011, was dropped despite performing reasonably well in the limited chances he got on the big stage.
With Pakistan currently facing a dearth of quality pacemen in their ranks, Tanvir’s haul of 24 wickets in four matches in the tournament can go a long way in earning him a recall.
Tanvir, who is the highest wicket-taker for PQA at the President’s Trophy, also remained confident of donning the national colours soon.
“I was a bit disturbed when I was dropped from the side,” Tanvir, who has played four Tests, two ODIs and a Twenty20, told The Express Tribune. “But I made sure I don’t lose hope. I train hard and try and keep myself super fit.”
The paceman nearly gave PQA their first win of the season by grabbing 12 wickets against NBP, and said that his aim was to impress the selectors ahead of the series against India and South Africa.
“I know how to bowl with the new and old ball and that gives me an advantage over others. This should be beneficial with two major series coming up against India and South Africa.”
Meanwhile, despite boasting 11 players with international experience, PQA’s failure to register a win after five rounds of the President’s Trophy has not ringed alarm bells for coach Rashid Latif.
The former Pakistan captain remained calm despite his team’s poor campaign, now into its second half.
“We’ve gone onto lose two matches which we should’ve won after taking the first-innings lead,” said Latif. “One win will boost our confidence, which will be great for us in the remaining rounds.”
Latif also praised Tanvir, adding that the fast-bowler deserved a recall in the national team.
“Tanvir is currently the best in domestic cricket because he has earned his wickets through bowling in the right areas. It’s not easy for a fast-bowler to bowl spells of 12-15 overs and consistently take wickets. I feel he deserves a call-up to the national team.”
