KARACHI: The bomb disposal squad (BDS) defused a 5kg bomb from a suspicious parcel placed on the road near the Quaid’s mausoleum, Express News reported on Tuesday.

Members of Majlis-e-Wahdatul Muslimeen were protesting the killing of their leader shot dead today in the Numaish area when unidentified men placed the parcel a few feet away from them.

This triggered panic among the people who called the police.

The police cordoned off the area and Rangers and BDS officials were summoned.

BDS officials opened the parcel and recovered and defused the bomb, which reportedly contained 5kg explosives.

Earlier, religious scholar and leader Allama Aftab Haider Jafri, was killed when unidentified men opened fire on the vehicle he was traveling in at a car parking in Saddar.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the protesters belonged to 'Majlis-e-Baitul Muslimeen' instead of 'Majlis-e-Wahdatul Muslimeen'. The error is regretted.
