LHC remarks: Hoti speaks out on Kalabagh dam
K-P CM Hoti says issue surrounding the construction of the Kalabagh Dam was a matter of life and death for Pakhtuns.
NOWSHERA:
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti said on Saturday that courts should not raise controversial issues, referring to the Kalabagh Dam dispute.
Addressing an Awami National Party (ANP) gathering at Daag Ismail Khel, he said the issue surrounding the construction of the Kalabagh Dam was a matter of life and death for Pakhtuns.
“We will never let the dam be constructed,” Hoti said, adding that any concerns about the power crisis could be dealt with by building the Munda and Bhasha dams instead.
He said that if the Munda Dam had been built, the 2010 floods could have been avoided.
Last week, the chief justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC), while hearing a petition on the Kalabagh Dam, remarked that objections raised by Sindh and K-P over the construction of the dam were political.
Hoti said that he respected the decision of the courts but the LHC had created confusion about whether or not to construct the dam. He said it was ‘against the wishes of the whole nation.’
