PESHAWAR:

Police have arrested four policemen and an assistant director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) for allegedly robbing a currency dealer of more than 300,000 Saudi Riyals.

Addressing a press conference at the Pahari Pura police station, City Police SP Asif Iqbal said that six men in police uniforms robbed currency dealer Arshad Khan at gunpoint from his shop on Ring Road on October 24. Suspects arrived at the scene on motorbikes and a truck.

After the incident, police registered an FIR and began initial investigations. A sketch of the accused was also prepared with the help of the victim.

In light of the evidence, police arrested sub-inspector Noor Islam, a member of the security team of the provincial finance minister. After interrogations, Islam told the police that the assistant director of an intelligence organisation, Yousaf, his driver Naseem, a constable named Kaleem and another man Shahzad were also in the group that robbed the dealer, adding that the accused are involved in multiple cases of robberies.

All the accused have been arrested and were produced before court, which granted them a two-day remand.

Three members of the gang are still at large. SP Iqbal said that the policemen and intelligence bureau official were being interrogated and appreciated the police for efficiently handling the case.

He further confirmed that around half of the stolen money was recovered from the suspects and that it had been given back to the currency dealer.
