KARACHI: Over one dozen workers and supporters of the Awami National Party were detained from Mehmoodabad on Tuesday, after they reportedly attacked the police for arresting party leaders.

Earlier, senior ANP activist Amanullah and his companion Shahnawaz, who is the son of party leader Mateenullah, were arrested in a raid.  Mehmoodabad SHO Raja Tanvir told The Express Tribune that Amanullah was wanted in a robbery case which took place four months ago. According to Tanvir, the suspect was arrested while harassing residents of the area by opening fire with a TT pistol.

Following the arrests, workers and supporters of ANP gathered on the main Korangi Road to protest. Police said they were throwing stones on vehicles and blocked the road by burning tyres. As the heavy contingent of police tried to disperse the protesters, they reportedly retaliated by attacking them with stones.

While using teargas shells and aerial firing to control the protesters, police entered Kashmir Colony and apprehended around one dozen suspects.

SHO Tanvir said that cases against the detainees, allegedly belonging to ANP, have been registered for being involved in riots and attacking the police. No weapons were found in their possession. The ANP spokesperson was not available for comments when contacted.
