Rs388.66 million allocated for bolstering girls education in 2 K-P districts
K-P government announces 2500 scholarships for girls in Torghar and Kohistan for studying up to class 10.
The intense agitation caused by female education to the Taliban who shot at 14 year-old peace activist and student Malala Yousufzai in Swat on October 9, 2012, has not deterred the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government which has allocated Rs388.66 million for the promotion of female education in two comparatively under-developed districts of Torghar and Kohistan, Radio Pakistan reported on Monday.
An official of the education department said the allocation has been for districts of Torghar and Kohistan, to ensure increased enrollment of girls in schools and to lower the drop-out ratio.
The grant aims at lifting female literacy rate.
He said that 1250 merit scholarships of Rs1500 each would be provided from class one to five for the next five years. Another 1250 scholarships of Rs2000 each have been chalked out for class 6 to 10 for the next five years.
A recent UN report noted that Pakistan had the second worst global rate of children out of school with as many as 5.1 million children out of classrooms. Of these, 3 million were females.
