BAHAWALPUR:

District Coordination Officer Dr Naeem Rauf on Friday suspended more than 80 teachers of the Education Department under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability (PEEDA) Act.

The teachers were suspended for being absent from duty or performing poorly.

The orders were issued in a meeting held to review performance of the Education Department employees.

As many as 1,405 schools in Bahawalpur district were monitored by the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) in September. The report submitted by the monitoring teams to the DCO said that 11 schools had been found to be closed. It said that 87 teachers and 18 staff members were found absent from duty in schools that were operating.

Most of the absentees worked at schools in Ahmadpur East, Yazman and Hasilpur.

Muhammad Riaz, the National Commission for Human Development general manager, said the enrollment percentage in government schools was recorded at 43, in private schools at 13 and madaris at 13. Thirty per cent of the children, who should be in school, were not enrolled, the report said.

Unhappy with the figures, the DCO warned inefficient teachers and school staff of disciplinary action. “People playing with the future of children will not be forgiven,” he said.

He directed the Education executive district officer and other officials concerned to suspend all the teachers and staff who were absent from work.

He also directed the EDO to ensure that the target to enroll at least five children in schools every month must be achieved.
