KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari directed the Sindh government that all basic facilities must be provided to the flood-affected people living in camps before winter.

He said this while reviewing the post-flood situation via video conference at the Chief Minister’s House on Wednesday. Zardari took notice of the reports indicating the poor living conditions at relief camps and told the authorities to speed up the work in providing the people medicines, blankets, mosquito nets and other essentials.

Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, his advisor on relief management, Haleem Adil Shaikh, and MNA Amir Magsi briefed the president about the current situation. Meanwhile, deputy commissioners of all [six] affected districts were online at district headquarters. Shah informed the president that the Sindh government had already approved Rs.1 billion for the affected areas. Senior Minister for Education and Literacy Pir Mazharul Haq, Minister Finance Murad Ali Shah and Minister for Local Government Agha Siraj Durrani were among those who attended the meeting.

During the meeting, however, Shaikh lamented the slow progress of the health department and said that they had not provided the people living in the camps any form of medical care even though they had been requested several times.

“This can trigger an outbreak of different diseases,” said Sheikh.

Shaikh told The Express Tribune that out of the six affected districts, the situation in Khairpur Mirs, Sukkur and Ghotki was returning back to normal, but areas in Jacobabad, Qambar Shahdadkot and Kashmore, were still inundated. “Qambar Shahdadkot and Jacobabad are the two most affected districts and the relief department is looking after them while rehabilitation work has been initiated in Kashmore,” said Shaikh. He added that he visit the relief camps on Eid, where his department has arranged food for over 50,000 people.
