‘Officers are more loyal to politicians than the police force’

Police going over records to verify again the character, political affiliations, criminal records of officers.

KARACHI:
The politicisation of the police force is the basic reason for its failure, observed the Supreme Court on Wednesday. Officers are more loyal to politicians than the police force.

By way of an answer, police chief Fayyaz Leghari said that they were going over the records to verify again the character, political affiliations and criminal record of his officers. The Intelligence Bureau will help but there aren’t enough men on board to complete the task quickly, he said. If they find criminal records they will take action against those officers.

The department was also computerising records and all men will receive service books within a week, the IG added.

Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali said that each day in court they faced the phenomenon of the involvement of police in crime. And they tamper with the content of their service books and get off scot free. “Everything is being done as eyewash,” remarked the bench. “It is unfortunate that incompetent people are everywhere.”

Only one recommendation has been followed all year: the appointment of judges to the anti-terrorism courts.

Justice Amir Hani Muslim questioned the IG about the state of affairs at the police training centres, where 1,500 recruits suffered from food poisoning recently. He said the conditions at the centres were worse than in the prisons. “If this is how they’re trained, how will they morally act?”
