Compensation: How come non-Sindh residents paid less, asks SC

The families of 326 victims have been compensated, while the other cases are still being processed.

KARACHI:

The Supreme Court has directed the Advocate General of Sindh and additional chief secretary to submit their reports as to whether any survivor or family of a victim of target killings was being discriminated against when it came to compensation from the government.

AG Abdul Fattah Malik informed it that 1,310 people had fallen prey to target killings. A committee headed by Justice (retired) Qurban Ali Alvi was formed to assess the loss of life and property and determine the entitlement for compensation.

The families of 326 victims have been compensated, while the other cases are still being processed. The bench asked why families of target killings’ victims had not been compensated while those affected by the Baldia garment factory fire had been. It observed that some sort of discrimination was being shown, as the relatives of the victims from Karachi were given more money than those from other provinces. The IG was directed to submit a policy under which entitlement of a policeman was determined for the payment to his family.
