In the South Asian region, however, Pakistan ranked third, below Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and left Bangladesh and India trailing behind at 129 and 132 respectively.
While Bangladesh also fell five places, India maintained its position compared to 2012.
Within Pakistan, Faisalabad led the pack in Ease of Doing Business with the next five places also going to cities from Punjab. Karachi ranked in at number 9.
How are countries ranked?
According to the index’ website, “economies are ranked on their ease of doing business, from 1 – 185.”
A high ranking on the index means “the regulatory environment is more conducive to the starting and operation of a local firm.”
Bad performance
Pakistan performed worse off, compared to 2012, on almost all indicators and benchmarks used to formulate the index.
The country fared poorly on ease of businesses receiving an electricity connection and trading across borders, compared to last year.
It received the lowest rank, 171, on getting electricity. While it takes 206 days to get an electricity connection in Pakistan, the South Asian average is 148 days.
The index measures ease on the following benchmarks: starting a business, dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, registering property, getting credit, protecting investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts and resolving insolvency.

@Arijit Sharma: We do not want a free for all. I prefer local capitalism. Even i do brother. Its just that i want my farmers to earn from me rather than some multinational earning dollars out of me and running away when we need them....
@Ch. Allah Daad: And your favorite Nwaz bhai has paid stipend to the family of Malik Ishaq, what do you say on it?
Keep it up dears. If we maintain this high image we will soon beat South Korea with the help of our Chini friends.
Esteemed Pakistani Readers : . To start with I fully agree that Pakistan has a far, far better Environment as well as a better Business Friendly Organizations to set up Business in Pakistan. . How is it that the above "Enlightenment" has not yet dawned upon Pakistani Entrepreneurs to increase their Business Enterprises - be they of a Commercial, Trading or Industrial - Manufacturing Nature - and concentrate on increasing and improving their Businesses in Pakistan rather than look for Avenues to start Business and Industry in India? . I look forward to a "Better Understanding of Pakistan in General and Pakistanis in Particular" in this regard. . Cheers
@Somesh: " ... Means those who rank lower have stricter local regulations to avoid foreign companies rampaging around… "

hahaha.. can't beleive that, what was the base, india, china and brazil are ranked so low,, wth?? definately not based on the industries the set up.. :D
@Pravin:
that was the best coment so far
Congratulations!! Now do business.
You dropped 3 positions -- that's not good -- ranking higher than India isn't saying much and really shouldn't be a concern.

As it's important to look at the Index, but this is by no means related to the amount of business they attract for number of other reasons
ranking of BRIC nations :- china (91 st) russia(112 th) brazil(130 th) india (132 nd)...............
It is simply a question of deregulating the economy. The entry of a firm should be dictated by business consideration, and not by bureaucrats and politicians.
@Ch. Allah Daad: The blame lies on those in society who support religious madness over humanity. Why blame bad crop when soil is bad!!!
Only issue we have is image (and law and order). . I find it very easy to do business in Pakistan. In fact, it is a very lucrative market for making a lot of profit within a year!
Congrats Pakistan! But still can't figure out why no one wants to do business with Pakistan.
India actually managed to avoid the wooden spoon in enforcing contracts again courtesy of Timor-Leste. It has also managed to march towards the wooden spoon in construction permits. Kaushik Basu (former Chief Economic Advisor to GoI) lamented laboriously in all Economic Surveys on the pathetic rankings as well as the ease with which certain indices could be improved with legislation and a little political will. India has traditionally tested the nerves of all and sundry when it comes to business. There are certain provincial governments in western India and southern India that have actually been cutting the red-tape so the provincial rankings might be very different and actually relevant. Its like the HDI where Kerala competes with US and UP with DRC. Still all in all a disappointment that has become mundane :(
Good report. Should help the Government in setting it's priorities (If they wish to)

Amazingly, we're at 32 in Protecting Investors. This is far better and equal to some of top nations in Doing Business.
In the same Index, we are 171 (out of 185) for getting Electricity. We've not got our priorities right.
Vote PTI and Pakistan will be ranked at least No 9 in 19 days.
Not low enough, lets vote for PPP and PML-N and bring it a little lower, we're almost there. Another 5 years and we can achieve it. We are doing everything we can to make that happen.
