Doongi Ground: Contempt plea filed against chief minister
Petitioner says Shahbaz was ordered to restore park a year ago.
LAHORE:
A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court seeking contempt of court proceedings against Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and officials of the city district government for not implementing the court’s order to remove construction material from the Gulberg Doongi Ground and restore it.
Ahmad Imran Ghazi has filed the contempt of court petition through Advocate Muhammad Azhar Siddique. He submitted that the LHC had in 2011 ordered the Punjab government to remove any and all construction at the Doongi Ground and return the park to the state it was in before contractors started work on a cinema there. The petitioner said that the court had also directed the authorities to take action against the officials who had allowed the construction work at the park.
The project, which started in 2006 when Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi was chief minister of the Punjab, was for the construction of an IMAX theatre and a shopping mall. After several years of litigation, a full bench of the LHC had allowed the Punjab government to build a parking plaza, a library and a bowling alley on 18 percent of the 39-kanal area of the Doongi Ground, with the rest to remain a public park.
The petitioner said that in a statement to the court in 2009, Shahbaz Sharif had pledged to restore the park. However, he had now approved plans for the construction of a library on the entire 39-kanal area, the petitioner claimed.
He asked the court to punish the chief minister, the Lahore commissioner, the district coordination officer and the director general of the Lahore Development Authority for contempt.
LHC summons SBP
governor
Justice Khalid Mahmood of the Lahore High Court on Thursday summoned State Bank of Pakistan Governor Yaseen Anwar for October 23 over his failure to make a decision on the application of a former employee seeking seven per cent cost of living allowance in his pension emoluments.
SBP’s ex-chief manager Aminuddin has filed a contempt petition, submitting that the court had directed Anwar in March 2011 to decide his pension issue.
The petitioner said he was retired in 1996, and was drawing the said allowance at that time. He said the allowance should be merged in his basic pay, and pension and other retirement benefits calculated accordingly.
The petitioner said that despite the lapse of six months and several reminders to Anwar, his application had not been decided in the light of the LHC order.
