CJ observes by supporting a party, the president had violated the oath.
ISLAMABAD:
In a reply submitted in the Asghar Khan case on Wednesday, the Presidency stated that there is no political cell operating currently in the President House, Express News reported.
The rejoinder was submitted by the President Asif Ali Zardari’s Secretary Asif Hayat.
Heading a three-member judicial bench, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said that by supporting the Islamic Jahmoori Ittehad (IJI), the president had gone against the presidential oath, according to which a president cannot discriminate between political parties or groups.
The chief justice observed that Aslam Beg, as an Army chief, should have restrained himself from intervening in political matters.
Justice Khilji Arif Hussain said that distribution of funds in billions of rupees was Beg and former ISI chief Assad Durrani’s individual act and that the entire Army cannot be blamed for it.
Upon being questioned, the registrar informed the Supreme Court that the former director-general of Military Intelligence (MI) has received summons and had assured that he will attend tomorrow’s hearing.
