Umrani urges overhaul of Balochistan govt

Chief justice’s directives echoed: Balochistan govt has failed the people.

QUETTA:
A top official of the Pakistan Peoples Party in Balochistan on Monday called upon the federal government to declare the provincial government headed by Chief Minister Nawab Muhammad Aslam Raisani as a failure.

Under the given circumstances, PPP provincial president Mir Muhammad Sadiq Umrani said a new governmental structure needs to be formed in the province. These views were expressed at a news conference at Umrani’s residence on Monday.

Umrani said that he had been vocal from time to time both over the incompetence of the provincial government and the chief minister as well as the worsening law and order situation. While issuing an interim order over the poor security situation in the province, he said, the chief justice of the apex court had castigated the provincial government for failing to establish its writ in the province.

Addressing the chief secretary of Balochistan, as well as the government machinery, Umrani said that after the order of the Supreme Court, the provincial government was rendered illegitimate and unconstitutional which meant that orders from the chief minister of Balochistan carried no legal weight, therefore, “no orders of the chief minister should be followed,” added Umrani.

He was of the view that if government secretaries followed Raisani’s directives despite the Supreme Court’s interim order, the act would be considered a crime and all individuals following those orders would be in contempt of court.

Umrani demanded that the federal government should ask the governor of Balochistan, as a federal government representative, to call a session of the Balochistan Assembly to elect a new leader of the house.
