Bomb strapped on donkey kills six in central Orakzai

Nine suspects have been arrested in the search operation launched soon after the incident.

HANGU:
A bomb strapped to a donkey killed at least six people and wounded more than 20 others in the Mishti Hassanzai Darra area in central Orakzai on Thursday, officials said.

“A remote-controlled bomb strapped to a donkey blew up as the animal entered a small bazaar of the village, killing at least four people on the spot and injuring more than 20 others,” Assistant Political Agent (APA) Fazal Qadir informed reporters.

The injured were rushed to hospitals in Kohat and Peshawar.

A search operation was launched soon after the explosion and security forces cordoned off the area. Nine suspects have been arrested thus far.

“It was a huge explosion that was heard at a four kilometre radius,” Qadir added.

Five shops and four vehicles parked in the passenger stand were also destroyed due to the explosion, the APA said.

Political administration official Nouman identified the deceased as Muhammad Rahman, Zahid Gul, Haji Rahman and Hayat Khan, adding that Haji Khan and Gul Wali died on the way to hospital.

While talking to The Express Tribune, Nauman said that according to the bomb disposal squad around 15 kilograms of explosives were used in the blast.

“After causing much harm to human life, these militants have not even spared animals,” he added.

Hassanzai Darra shares its boundary with Khyber Agency from where militants infiltrate the area and target civilians, the official explained.

It was second such explosion in the Orakzai Agency, where a bomb was strapped onto a donkey.

On August 11, a bomb strapped on the back of a donkey exploded in Ferozkhel Mela area of Orakzai Agency. However, no human loss was reported. (With additional input from AFP)
