New prosecutor named in Malik Riaz case
SC directs Qazi Muhammad Jamil to submit fresh list of witnesses, adjourns case for indefinite period.
ISLAMABAD:
The Supreme Court on Tuesday appointed former attorney general and senior lawyer Qazi Muhammad Jamil as prosecutor in contempt of court case against business tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain.
Announcing its reserved judgment in the case a two-judge bench comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Ijaz Chaudhry appointed Jamil as prosecutor after removing Attorney General Irfan Qadir from the prosecution of the case. The registrar, on the Supreme Court’s directives, had presented a list of senior lawyers today.
The bench directed Jamil to submit a fresh list of witnesses and other record pertaining to the case and ordered to de-list all the names of witnesses, the record and proofs that former prosecutor of the case Irfan Qadir had submitted in the court.
The court had earlier rejected a plea of Irfan Qadir to include the name of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in the list of witnesses of this case involving his son Arsalan Iftikhar.
The judicial bench turned down the request of putting Riaz’s name on the Exit Control List (ECL). When Riaz’s counsel, Dr Basit requested the court to grant immunity from court hearings to his client, Justice Afzal said it would be decided after hearing all the respondents. The court has adjourned the case for indefinite time.
