Endlessly victimised: JUI jirga demands peace, opposes LG system

Decides political change is impossible while drone strikes continue.

KHAR:
A Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) jirga held in Sadiqabad Khar, Bajaur Agency, concluded it would oppose the new local government (LG) system proposed for the area.

The jirga was held as a continuation of the last tribal jirga held in Peshawar and Mohmand to develop a consensus about the future political structure of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata). The jirga was organised for tribal representatives of all seven agencies and frontier regions (FRs) to raise their concerns about the LG system.

The jirga reached the conclusion that any changes in the political or geographic dimensions would be opposed until peace was restored. They also opposed incorporating Fata into Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and implementing the LG system. Malik Qadar Khan from North Waziristan said it was not possible to think about any new ventures, particularly political change, while drone strikes continued in the agency.

“Except for announcements, there has been no plan for reconstructing homes and property that were destroyed during military operations,” said JUI Bajaur General Secretary, Maulvi Rasheed.

Former parliamentarian Ghulam Sadique said that tribal people, who are the real owners of this land, were not consulted about the new LG system that has been proposed for Fata.
