Wheat: Weather-resistant crops to be developed

Unfavourable weather conditions and other factors resulted in a significant decrease in wheat production.

Agriculture scientists of the country were focusing on developing wheat varieties that can survive unfavourable and harsh weather conditions while giving high yield. Unfavourable weather conditions and other factors resulted in a significant decrease in wheat production, said a release issued by Punjab Agriculture Department on Friday. Unfavourable weather conditions in the US resulted in inflation in international wheat prices and adversely impacted national wheat production. Pakistan’s wheat production contracted to 23.52 million tons in 2011-12 from 25.09 million ton record production in 2010-11 due to unfavourable weather conditions besides other factors. Punjab contributed 19.04 million ton wheat when Pakistan witnessed bumper wheat crop in 2010-11. However, in 2011-12, Punjab contributed only 17.7 million tons of wheat, as result total wheat production clocked in at 23.52 million tons.
