Candy factory sealed over poor hygiene
Universal Food Factory also fined Rs20,000.

The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) sealed a candy factory near Data Darbar over poor hygiene and substandard raw material on Thursday.
“There were insects on food items placed out in the open. And they were using very poor quality substances to manufacture candies, violating several regulations,” said Dr Masud Ashraf, who is the current district officer for food and nominated to be the PFA’s deputy director of operations.
Dr Ashraf said samples had been sent for testing to the lab. He said the Universal Food Factory had also been fined Rs20,000. He was accompanied on the raid by the Data Ganj Bakhsh Town food safety officer.
On September 26, the PFA had sealed the Best Ketchup factory at Shalimar Town.
The PFA, which began operations on July 2, had up till October 1 served notices on 1,120 factories and restaurants to improve hygiene, and fined 86 eateries and manufacturers a total of Rs480,000.
The restaurants fined by the PFA for poor hygiene and using substandard material include Ze Grille (Rs5,000), Gloria Jeans (Rs5,000), Lahore Chatkhara (Rs5,000), Gourmet in Barkat Market (Rs5,000), Tai Wah on Main Boulevard (Rs10,000), Nando’s on MM Alam Road (Rs10,000), Ravi Restaurant on Maulana Shaukat Ali Road (Rs10,000), Fazle Haq, Dera Restaurant, Lahore Broast, Yasir Broast and Burger Corner.
