3 TTP militants arrested

CID officials said that they had received a tip-off about the suspect's location and carried out a raid.

KARACHI:
The Anti-Extremism Cell of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) said on Monday that it had arrested an alleged member of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Fazlullah group.

CID officials said that they had received a tip-off about the suspect's location late Sunday night and early next morning, carried out a raid near Shahzad Cinema, Pirabad Chowki in Qasba Colony.

According to them, the arrested man, identified as Fawad Ali, is said to be an expert at bomb making and assembling.

Ali used to work under the supervision of Commander Khalil, who was the commander in Malakand under Fazlullah, the officials said. Ali prepared explosives for vehicles that were used by Taliban militants to attack civilian and military installments in Malakand.

According to the CID, Ali hails from Swat. He moved to Karachi following the military operation that started in the area after the peace accord made by the government in 2009 failed.

The police also claimed to have seized one kilogramme of explosive material, 20 metres of wire used in explosives, a detonator, a TT pistol with a loaded magazine and bullets.

SP CID Omer Shahid of the Anti-Extremism Cell told The Express Tribune that Fawad Ali had been involved in many other crimes as well. "We are interrogating him and hoping to find some useful information," Shahid said.

In a separate raid, Sohrab Goth SPO Irfan Bahadur also claimed to have arrested two people associated with the Tehreek-i-Taliban, South Waziristan wing. The two suspects, Asghar and Riyaz, were arrested from Gulshan-e-Maymar.

"They used to manage the financial affairs of the TTP in Karachi," SPO Bahadur said. He added that the police was diligently pursuing militancy in Karachi and would curb it at all costs.

Since the beginning of 2010, the Special Investigation Unit and CID have arrested more than 37 people who are allegedly involved with militant organisations.

Some of these men are also claimed to be top Afghan Taliban officials and al Qaeda leaders. The police recently arrested Lashkar-i-Jhangvi men for involvement in the murder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement lawmaker Raza Haider. The Lashkar has been affiliated with al Qaeda.
