"We are happy to have strategic relations with Pakistan. We want this strategic pact with Pakistan. But we want some conditions and preconditions from Pakistan,” Karzai told a press conference.
"If these conditions are met - terrorism is stopped, extremism is dismantled, anti-Afghan activities are stopped, destruction of Afghanistan is stopped, friendship starts between the two countries which hasn't happened so far - then a strategic pact would be signed between Afghanistan and Pakistan," he said.
Afghan future predictions
Karzai criticised Western media for gloomy predictions about Afghanistan's future once US-led foreign forces withdraw from the war against Taliban insurgents in 2014.
"This is a psychological war by the Western media against Afghanistan: once the foreign troops pull out, Afghanistan will be poor, there will be civil war and the Taliban will return, etcetera," Karzai told a news conference.
The president said he had raised the issue with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during a visit to the United States for the UN General Assembly last week.
"I believe if the objective is to influence future agreements on the number of US military bases, the presence of US troops beyond 2014 - it can't achieve this through psychological war," he said.
The United States has said it does not seek permanent bases in Afghanistan, but is expected to keep a small force in the country after 2014 for counter-terror operations. Details have not yet been agreed.
Karzai mentioned in particular The New York Times, BBC and CNN, adding, however, that "unfortunately, local media, television and radios and analysts are also predicting civil war in Afghanistan once foreign troops pull out".
Respected Afghan expert Gilles Dorronsoro of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is just one among many analysts who have predicted renewed strife in Afghanistan.
"After 2014, the level of US support for the Afghan regime will be limited and, after a new phase in the civil war, a Taliban victory will likely follow," he wrote recently.

Secondly that Afghanistan guy who posted a comment above is so well informed My Pakistani brothers lets clap for the guy, he's as informed as their president! :P
Man you rock!! :P
You should totally join the Taliban perhaps half of them may actually die of nonsense :P
Man he's one funny guy :D He lived in Pakistan all his life in Quetta city because obviously Afghanistan was never a nation worth living in with peace! How can the U.S take him seriously?? Pakistan has helped Afghanistan since 1947 that's how we get repaid! Pakistan provides Afghanistan with a port they can use to trade(still active) and they provide us with Taliban and Al-Qaeda and say they always lived in Pakistan..(are u kidding me?)
2nd largest refugee movement in the history of the world was from Afghanistan to Pakistan and they repay us by robbing our people, killing, spreading terrorism, bombing and bringing drugs with them to sell to Pakistan and even taking our jobs!
Karzai come on! you gotta be kidding me!!!
I fail to understand this man
And Hamid Karzai has come up with yet another statement all of a sudden, when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is visiting Pakistan.Any guess?
pay cheque is on its way Karazi... lol
imran khan should come out clearly that does he support terrorists and extremists who have killed thousands of Pashtoons in afghanistan and pakistan tribal areas
@True Muslim Paki: Day dreaming?????
@The Patriot:All Afghanis staying in Pakistan from last 40years should be forcefully kicked back to Afghanistan & then their will be no Terrorist left in Pakistan who will try to Attack Afghanistan. so problem solved all live happily ever after
Afghanistan should be divided into four parts, one to merge with Iran, One with Pakistan, one with Tajikistan and one with Uzbekistan. An independant Afghanistan is not viable and will always be engulfed in violence and blood shed
One day you Pakistanis will be sorry for not listening to President Karzai!
Before Pakistan asks Afghanistan to do that first let me remind you whom you are talking to here.
Afghanistan is a governed by a state whose writ is questionable in many parts of the country. Its ranked among the most failed in the world. Various factions within the country fighting each other for dominance.
Oh wait, Pakistan is also similar!
Pakistan is was the first to host Terrorists in this case and hence should be the first to take action before accusing someone else of doing the same.
well said now pakistan should stop the moulana general zia ul haq philosophy of islam. this should be stopped pukhtoons are suffereing on both sides. pak should respond to this seriously and stop supporting proxies
@De: De, I am confused and so is the rest of the world. I thought the TTP were hiding in Pakistan? Why would they provide security to Imrans ' excursion' into waziristan when he is on the so called peace march. Which means they can't be in Afghanistan. Wake up to the smell of coffee.
Why cry now Karzai? the Talibs are only taking cue from Kabul: that the "Durand Line" doesn't exist. Recognize the international border, fence and mine it, control it, and then talk.
@True Muslim Paki: sorry mate ....that cannot happen...
Waste of breath - Pakistan hasn't paid any attention to similar complaints lodged over the past ten years so why are they going to suddenly do something now? TTP has finally figured out how to play the border game so Pakistan is now getting a taste of it's own medicine -- some might call that justice.
Mr Karzai, we Indians have been telling Pakistan the same for the past three decades but they didn't pay any heed to us so please stop banging your head against the wall. However, India took counter-measures by erecting barbed wire fence along LoC and increased its forces with desired results which you can't do having meager resources and security forces at your disposal. So relax till 2014 and wait and see which way the wind blows.
@De who writes "How about you stop letting TTP hide and stage attacks from your country into Pakistan?"
Don't you see how big a LIE you are saying?
TTP leader, Mr. Mehsud said, he would provide security to Imran Khan in Waziristan. The last time I checked Waziristan is in Pakistan.
On the contrary Haqqani, Zawahiri, Mullah Omar are believed to be in Pakistan.
Osama was your state guest.
@ all those who gave commented above Why don't we ask the outside world who is supporting terrorism ( afghanistan or Pakistan ) ? Just name one country in your neighbourhood who is happy with your terrorism policies. Just think about it ..The whole world can't be wrong. Regards
Mr Karzai, enjoy your days in office as mayor of Kabul. The reverse countdown has begun for 2014. Lets see if you can outlast Najeebullah post soviet with-drawl. But remember you are bound to meet the same fate as him.
Tell you what pak want, mine the whole border to max with afghanistan and stop all transit between 2 countries. Then allow Afghan and its allies to take care of Afghanistan. Just leave us alone.
It high time pak come out of this WOT non-sense. NATO can use Uzbekistan, tajekistan and turkey to do the supplies or use India as India are so fond of saying.
This is precisely what India has been saying also, ofcourse to deaf ears
Everyone thinks he is innoccent & like to point finger . Every govt should deliver good things for their public.
There will be no strategic agreement with Afghanistan until they stop cross border raids into Pakistani border villages.
Bravo to Pakistan govt's policies, even those who are beggars and physically have over 4 million of their countrymen on our land have guts to raise voice....... shame on our so called leaders
First, afghans stop aligning with India & US. Then Pakistan will consider the request.
Yes Please!!! (majority of that chunk belongs to other side of the border anyways).
Pakistan must stop this illegal crossings immediately and seal & fence that border completely where ever possible and must evict millions of refugees for its own survival. This side should be given more importance than the Wahga.
How about you stop letting TTP hide and stage attacks from your country into Pakistan? When Pakistan proposes to properly seal the border and put water beds and stuff, why dont the Afghans agree? Why don't your forces and the ISAF stop them from coming into Afghanistan? If u cant do it, how can u expect Pakistan to stop them singlehandedly while also fighting the TTP?
Mr. Karzai by terrorist do u mean the 3.4 Million Afghan Refugees that Pakistan is 'harboring'?
