IIUI’s new president: President likely to approve a Saudi’s appointment
The president’s post at IIUI has been lying vacant for the last year and a half.
ISLAMABAD:
A Saudi scholar is most likely to be appointed as president of the Islamic International University, Islamabad (IIUI), after being recommended by the oil-rich country.
Dr Darvesh has been nominated along with two other candidates and the recommendation has already been forwarded to President Asif Ali Zardari for final approval.
The Saudi government had earlier sought two key posts of the university, rector and president, for its citizens. The government has decided to endorse the Saudis’ recommendation for the president’s slot, said an official.
“The president has made up his mind to appoint a Saudi national for the top administrative position of the university in accordance with their wish,” the officials explained. Dr Darvesh will probably be appointed upon the president’s return to the country in the first week of October.
Dr Darvesh is currently pro-rector of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which has a student body of around 25,000. The president’s post at IIUI has been lying vacant for the last year and a half after the retirement of former president Dr Anwar Siddiqi. Since then, there has not been a permanent president.
