Blunt coins: FAC play Khota Sikka parodies the powerful

Audien­ce apprec­iates reform­ist tenden­cies of play.

FAISALABAD: Khota Sikka, a comedy, was performed on Saturday night at the Faisalabad Arts Council (FAC).

The play was written by M Fayyaz Mahi and presented by Reet theatre group. The director was Shakeel Sheikh while Amjad Islam was assistant director. The cast included Zahid Hashmi, Faisal Ramay, Aneel Anwar, Ali Haidar, Nida Hashmi, Fiza Amanat, Waqas Hashmi, Kako Teli, Wahab, Manahal Pasha and Nausherwan.

The audience remained glued to the performance which giving the impression that the play had struck a cord with them.

When a member of the audience, Masood Rehmani, 60, was asked for a comment, he said, “What can you about your own life…it showed us our true face.”

“It shows how we engage with society only to fulfill our greed or act out of jealously. We do not try to do something for the welfare of either our kin or society as a whole,” he said.

Ghazala Siddique, also in her 60s, said that there were a number of people in high positions that they do not deserve.

“They are also giving us a bad name.”

“We will have to replace those who rule us if we are to progress and become prosperous… otherwise we shall remain where we were before independence,” she said.

Sheikh Sakhawat, also in the audience, said the writer was a reformist.

“The drama attempts to bring about change in the society,” he said.

He said the government should encourage theatres troupes in their attempt to bring about a better society.
