Indo-Pak council: FPCCI opposes formation of parallel business body
In the presence of the IPCCI, there is no need for the formation of a parallel joint business council.
KARACHI:
The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has on Tuesday opposed the formation of an India-Pakistan Joint Business Council.
A proposal for the formation of the council had come under discussion during recently-concluded commerce secretary-level talks between the two countries.
The Ministry of Commerce was informed in a statement quoting FPCCI President Haji Fazal Kadir Khan Sherani that an effective India-Pakistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IPCCI) already exists, which is recognised by the national chambers of both India and Pakistan.
“In the presence of the IPCCI, there is no need for the formation of a parallel joint business council, which will only create misunderstanding and confusion between the business communities of India and Pakistan,” it said. The IPCCI was formed under a memorandum of understanding that was signed in April 1999 between the FPCCI and Federation of India Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
