West Indies face must-win situation
West Indies play Ireland in a must-win game today in order to qualify for the Super Eights.
West Indies, who came into the tournament as one of the favourites, play Ireland in a must-win game today in order to qualify for the Super Eights.
Having lost to Australia by 17 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method, West Indies will know of the stakes even if they are facing less-fancied opponents. Captain Darren Sammy was confident going into the game, adding that the team had the potential to bounce back after the defeat against Australia, according iccworldtwenty20.com.
“The game against Australia is not going to dampen our spirits,” said Sammy. “We have good belief in our camp and we know we can do much better. We respect all our opponents and we won’t take Ireland for granted. We have seen how they have played over the last three years.
“We just have to win against Ireland, and we believe we can beat them. We have to, in order to qualify to the Super Eights. That’s what we intend to do.”
Sammy said that playing Australia in their first match of the tournament did not make a difference.
“That’s the way these matches are scheduled. I would have preferred we could win the first one. Now we just need to win to qualify for the Super Eights. Hopefully the weather stays good and we will get a full game.”
