Golf: ‘McIlroy is the new Woods’

Rory McIlroy that he will be a ‘marked man’ once the Ryder Cup kicks off later this month.

Jim Furyk, the 2010 PGA Tour player of the year, has issued an early warning to Rory McIlroy that he will be a ‘marked man’ once the Ryder Cup kicks off later this month. World number one McIlroy has been in impressive form, having won three of his last four tournaments, including the US PGA Championship. He also goes into the Ryder Cup as one of the men to watch, according to ESPN. McIlroy’s present dominance of the sport is reminiscent of Tiger Woods’ glory days, leading Furyk to suggest that the 23-year-old has inherited Woods’ crown as the world’s most feared player. “Obviously, he’s a marked man,” said Furyk. “He’s the number one in the world. He’s played phenomenal this year. No matter how he plays at the Tour Championship, he’s the present-day Tiger Woods and everyone’s eyes will be on him.”
