JI strike: Situation tense in parts of Karachi

A strike called by the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is underway followed by the murder of its party leader and former Liaquatabad Town nazim, Express News reported Wednesday.
Former Liaquatabad Town Nazim Dr Pervez Mehmood was shot dead along with a friend late on Monday night near the KDA Chowrangi in Nazimabad.
Aerial firing left the situation tense in some parts of Karachi.
Unknown men threw a hand grenade in PIB Colony which injured three people.

Angered protesters burnt tyres on the National Highway and put obstacles on the road which made it difficult for the traffic to pass. However, later, the police cleared the road.
Traffic on the roads remained thin and so did the public transport due to which people going to their offices faced difficulties.
Unknown men opened fire in Safoora Goth and Gulistan-e-Jauhar and forced the shopkeepers to close down their shops.
Five dead in Karachi violence incidents
Five people were killed while three remained injured in different incidents of violence and firing in Karachi.
Four people were gunned down by unknown men in areas including Malir, Lyari, Orangi Town and Agra Taj Colony.
A strangled body was recovered from the Nabi Baksh area.
Three people were injured in a firing incident near Metroville Cinema in Orangi Town.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik had earlier told the National Assembly in a briefing that 1,363 people have lost their lives at the hands of target killers during the past five years.
Giving a breakdown of the figure, Malik said that 104 people had been killed in year 2008, 160 in 2009, 373 in 2010, 478 in 2011 and 248 so far in 2012.
