Lights out: Soomros protest against power cuts
Dozens of men gathered on the main road in Rehmoonwali and chanted slogans against power company, its employees.
SUKKUR:
A protest was staged by members of the Soomro community against the Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) in Ghotki. On Sunday, dozens of men gathered on the main road in Rehmoonwali and chanted slogans against the power company and its employees. The Soomros claim that the company had disconnected their electricity for no reason. Khan Mohammad Soomro and Ehsan Soomro, who led the protest, said that the company’s line superintendent, Amjad Shah, had demanded Rs10,000 from them, but when they refused, he disconnected their electricity and took away their metres. Khan added that they did not have any outstanding dues and were not involved in electricity theft. “It is our sister’s wedding and we want to decorate it with lights,” he said. “They [SEPCO] usually target such houses as they know a disruption in the electricity supply will ruin the event and they can easily extort money from us.”
