Insider attacks have killed 47 NATO-led forces personnel this year.
KABUL:
A man believed to be a member of the Afghan local police force turned his weapon on soldiers from the NATO-led forces in the country's south on Saturday, killing two, the coalition said in a statement.
Afghan officials and NATO have expressed concern over the alarming rise in insider attacks, which have killed 47 NATO-led forces personnel this year.
The Pentagon has expanded counter intelligence staff in Afghanistan after a surge in insider attacks by Afghans thought to be friendly to US forces.
Earlier, president Obama had said that the United States needed to implement more safeguards for US troops in the worn-torn Afghanistan.
“I’ll be reaching out to President Karzai as well because we’ve got to make sure that we’re on top of this,” Obama had said.
Defence Secretary Leon Panetta also seemed deeply concerned about the killings “because of the lives lost and because of the potential damage to our partnership efforts,” Panetta had stated.
