Constable arrested in Gujranwala

Deputy prosecutor general Rana Bakhtiar said all the accused arrested will be presented in court on Saturday.

One of the witnesses to the lynching of two brothers in Sialkot – police constable Rizwan – has been arrested from Gujranwala. Meanwhile, deputy prosecutor general Rana Bakhtiar said all the accused arrested will be presented in court on Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, Judicial Commission chairman Kazim Malik said the inquiry report regarding the incident will be presented in the Supreme Court on Monday.

Speaking to Express News about the status of the investigation, Joint Investigation Team chief Mushtaq Ahmed Sukhera said that additional arrests will be made after the completion of the inquiry. He said that evidence has been collected during the inquiry and strict action will be taken against those involved.

Sukhera also said that 33 people including five policemen have been arrested in this connection so far while Sialkot DPO Waqar Ahmed Chouhan is under house arrest. He was detained by the Sialkot police on charges of negligence and for failing to stop the lynching of the teenage brothers on August 15.

However, residents of Buttar village where the incident took place contradict Sukhera’s claims and insist the police have apprehended 125 people of their village. These people, say the villagers, are not being allowed to meet anyone.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has assured that the investigation committee formed by Punjab government will present its report within a day or two and the same will be released to the media. He also said 98 per cent of those involved have so far been apprehended after having been identified in the video footage and will be given exemplary punishment.

He also promised strict action against those involved in the heinous murder and assured the families of justice.
