Hazardous: Polio virus detected in sewage samples

WHO Focal Person on Polio said that sewage water samples collected from Lahore had tested positive for polio virus.

LAHORE:

Samples of sewage water collected from Lahore have tested positive for the polio virus.

According to an official of the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), the World Health Organisation (WHO) had collected samples of sewerage water from WASA’s disposal pumps in June and July and sent them to the National Institute of Health, which has confirmed the presence of Police Virus Type 1 in the samples. When contacted, WHO Focal Person on Polio Dr Elias Durry said he could not confirm the report. He, however, said that sewage water samples collected earlier from Lahore had tested positive for the polio virus.
