Four-time national champions Wapda defeated debutants Wohaib FC 2-0 in the Pakistan Premier Football League match in Lahore on Saturday.
Wohaib FC put up a good show in containing Wapda’s strikers early on but failed to keep up after Mohammad Ahmed scored the opening goal in final minute of the first half. The lead was doubled by captain Arif Mehmood five minutes after the resumption. Ahmed got the player-of-the-match award.
According to the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) officials, the award has been introduced for each match in order to motivate the teams. A four-member committee, including match commissioner, a former national team member, and coaches of both the teams decide on the award.
“It is a good practice and will help us get into the national camp in the long run,” Ahmed told The Express Tribune. “The award is not only motivating all of us but it matters in terms of selection and brings hope for us.”
Earlier, Wapda had defeated PMC Athletico FC 1-0 in their first match of the new season.
