Flashfloods: Heavy rainfalls expected till Sunday

Wide spread thunderstorms with isolated heavy rainfall are expected in Peshawar, Nowshera, Kohat and Hazara Division.

The meteorological department has issued warnings of low to medium flooding in Khayali, Jindi, Swat, Kurram and Gambila rivers, in addition to the nullahs (rainwater drains) in Peshawar.


Heavy rains are also expected in the southern districts of DI Khan, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Karak, Hangu, and other frontier regions between Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.

“We expect flashfloods in Peshawar, DI Khan, Kohat, Bannu and some other parts of the country. The government has been informed and departments concerned have established flood warning centres,” said the director at the Peshawar met office, Mushtaq Khan.


Wide spread thunderstorms with isolated heavy rainfall are expected in Peshawar, Nowshera, Kohat and Hazara Division, he said, adding that scattered thunderstorms in Mardan, Swabi, Charsadda and Malakand are also forecasted.

“We are closely watching the situation. During the period in which flashfloods from local and urban nullahs (rainwater drains) are expected, people living by the river and stream banks are advised to take precautionary measure,” Khan said.

Peshawar has received 46 millimetres (mm) of rainfall in the past 46 hours and 6mm in the last 12 hours, Khan added.

Until Friday evening, Malam Jabba had received 10 mm, Para Chinar 9.2 mm, Bannu 7mm, Balakot 25.5 mm, Cherat 18 mm, Chitral 2 mm, Dir 7mm, Kakol, 22.2 mm, Patan 3 mm, Sadu Sharif 1mm and Temergara 2mm of rainfall in 12 hours.
