KARACHI:

The Sindh Education department will set up O’ and A’ Level schools in all districts of the province in an effort “to bring the educational level up to international standards”, said education minister, Pir Mazharul Haq.

This was decided at a meeting on education development schemes for the fiscal year 2012-13. “We want to bring in modern expertise to improve the local education system,” said Haq. The project of O’ and A’ Level schools will be completed within three years. Two separate schools for boys and girls will be set up in all 23 districts of the province, the department’s additional secretary for planning and development, Dilawar Ali Mangi, told The Express Tribune. The financial plan for this project is expected to be finalised by the end of September 2012.About Rs13 billion will be spent on a number of development schemes, said Haq, including a plan to upgrade primary schools to middle schools and middle schools to high schools, and setting up 78 degree colleges.

The meeting was also informed that IBA Community colleges will be opened in remote areas while a scheme in collaboration with the USAID was underway for the rehabilitation of the flood-affected school buildings.

Urging department officials to speed up the computerisation of employee data, Haq said that a committee will be set up to electronically record the information. “This will help us analyse employee qualifications and train them accordingly.”

To improve the service structure and rules, recruitment process and other comprehensive strategies, the minister said that an advisory committee comprising senior educationists will be formed to assist the monitoring and inspection directorate. The Sindh Assembly recently approved the establishment of the Sindh Teachers Education and Development Authority which will provide training to teachers.
