Cattle Market: Court rejects challenge to market move

"The old cattle market on Bund Road was a major source of traffic congestion and poor hygiene," says Hanif Khatana.

LAHORE:

Justice Shahid Saeed of the Lahore High Court on Thursday dismissed various petitions challenging the shifting of the city’s major cattle market from Bund Road to Shahpur Kanjran.

Bashir Ahmad, the head of a livestock farmers association, and others had challenged the move, saying the new market was too far outside the city.

Additional Advocate General Hanif Khatana, representing the Punjab government, said that the old cattle market on Bund Road was a major source of traffic congestion and poor hygiene.

He said the old market had been on 32 kanals, of which 22 kanals was being used as a graveyard. The new market at Shahpur Kanjran, Khatana said, was located on 700 kanals and had modern facilities.

Further, he said that the cattle market had been shifted in light of an earlier order passed by the Lahore High Court.
