ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will receive a grant of $23 million from Japan for the improvement of sewerage and water supply system in Punjab.

The agreement has been signed by the Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan Chihiro Atsumi and Secretary Economic Affairs Division Sibtain Fazal Halim in Islamabad.

Japan was the largest donor at the donors’ conference held in April 2009. So far, Japan has signed aid agreements worth over $510 million out of the promised $1 billion.

From the grant, $13.1 million will be used for the rehabilitation of sewerage and drainage systems in Lahore. The project will help improve the capacity of the existing sewerage and drainage systems, mitigate inundation damage and improve sanitary and hygienic conditions.

Japan had supplied additional pumps in 2005 for the first phase of the same project.

The Japanese ambassador said that the second phase will replace disposal pumps and trash rake systems at three pumping stations. The current discharge capacity will be enhanced by 38 per cent and 16 new pumps and two automatic trash rake systems will also be bought.

A grant of $9.1 million has also been allocated for improving the water supply system in Faisalabad.
