The wedding was set to be in November according to AFP but scheduling troubles between their sporting careers were amongst the many problems the couple just couldn’t overcome.
Sharapova admits that the break-up came at the end of spring, “Nobody asked me directly before, and I’m not the type of person to announce such things,” she said. “With Sasha’s career move to Turkey, it was extremely difficult as he wasn’t able to travel.” She further added that it was a challenging decision for both of them.
“It was a really nice period of time and we have a tremendous amount of respect for each other,” she said. “I would still love to call him a friend as we’ve spent some great years together.”
For anyone who had dreams of going to Sharapova’s wedding, don’t lose hope: “You still have a chance,” she laughs. “I still have many years ahead of me.”
