RAHIM YAR KHAN:
A drug inspector raided a veterinary hospital after having received complaints regarding the death of livestock due to the administering of expired drugs.
Thousands of injections were seized and sent to a laboratory for testing. Rahim Yar Khan district coordination officer (DCO) Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi received complaints from Livestock department officials stating that most of the animals at relief camps died after they had been administered injections by veterinarians at the local hospital.
On orders of the RY Khan DCO and executive district officer (EDO) health, drug inspector Maqbool Bhatti raided the veterinary hospital and seized injections worth millions of rupees.
Talking to The Express Tribune Drug inspector Maqbool Bhatti said that strict action would be taken once the lab test results came in. “We are waiting for the lab results but orders have been issued not to use any of the drugs currently in stock,” Bhatti said.
Livestock department officials said that the injections and other medicine worth Rs1.8m were bought a month ago, adding that they were scheduled to be distributed in all of the province’s districts. “The injections were sent to the flood relief camps after the country was hit by floods,” Bhatti said. Livestock officials also said that divisional director Livestock department, Chaudhry Muhammad Ashraf, had issued instructions to discontinue the use of the medicines until they had confirmed that they were safe for use.
According to officials, the injections were faulty and they alleged that funds had been embezzled during the purchase of the medicine.
