Awareness campaign: ‘War on dengue cannot be won without citizens’ help’
Walks, workshops, cleanliness drives held across the city.

Several dengue awareness activities were held and walks were observed around the city on Sunday to sensitise the citizens about the dengue fever epidemic and precautions against it. District government and elected officials, participating in the campaigns, stressed the need for citizens’ cooperation to make the drive successful.
An anti dengue workshop was organised by the city government at Town Hall. Citizens were urged to play their role in the fight against dengue.
Cleanliness operations were held at all Lahore Development Authority offices and at the University of Engineering and Technology and Punjab University campuses. Buildings were fumigated and sprayed with insecticide.
Several MNAs and MPAs joined the awareness walks in their constituencies. Government offices, including the Civil Secretariat, remained open on Sunday for the purpose.
Chief Secretary Nasir Mahmood Khosa visited several offices to monitor steps taken with regard to the campaign.
DCO stresses citizens’ cooperation
Addressing a workshop at Town Hall, District Coordination Officer Noorul Amin Mengal said that the citizens bore a responsibility to participate wholly in the campaign to eliminate dengue larvae.
He said elimination of dengue mosquito had become the district government’s priority. He said officials concerned had been directed to conduct surveillance of 3,251 junkyards, 1,199 basements and 1,552 under construction sites in the city over the next week.
The DCO said that fogging and spraying of areas with potential mosquito breeding sites was going on.
He reiterated the importance of citizens’ cooperation in the campaign saying that they (citizens) should ensure that there was no stagnant water in their houses, streets and colonies. He advised them to cover water tanks and containers. He said that the district administration had been working on a dengue plan since March. He said the performance of most of the workers in the campaign was commendable.
LDA conducts cleanliness operation
A cleanliness operation was carried out at all LDA offices on the directions of LDA Director General Ahad Khan Cheema. A training seminar titled Causes and Prevention of Dengue Fever was arranged at the Community Centre in Muslim Town.
Additional Director Generals Mariam Kayani and Muhammad Usman, Chief Engineer Asrar Saeed, Water and Sanitation Agency Managing Director Mian Abdullah, Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning Agency Chief Engineer Saeed Akhtar and Senior Entomologist Saeedur Rehman from the office of the EDO (health) attended the training.
Addressing the seminar, Rehman said that the cleaning of potential dengue mosquito breeding sites was the most successful mechanism for combating the challenge. He said fogging and insecticide sprays killed many useful insects.
“Stagnant water of all types, except sewer, provides favourable conditions for the reproduction of mosquito. Therefore water in all containers should be dried to control the spread of dengue,” he said.
He urged the people to keep their houses as well as the streets clean.
