Electricity woes: Townsmen protest over outages, low voltage
Claim appliances worth millions of rupees damaged due to low voltage.
MIRPUR:
Residents of a densely-populated town in the outskirt of Mirpur city protested on Saturday over prolonged and unscheduled electricity outages and low voltage in their area.
Accompanied by scores of protesting residents of Mian Muhammad Town, two elders, Haji Muhammad Nazir and Assad Mahmood Mughal, told media persons at the local press club that thousands of electricity consumers in the area have been facing low voltages for the past many months and their electrical appliances worth millions of rupees have been damaged as a result.
They said that despite repeated requests to the local electricity department, their problems remain unresolved. Moreover, they said that the duration of loadshedding in their area has increased, compounding the problems of the residents.
They demanded that a new high-power electricity transformer be installed in the area’s main power grid to resolve the problem of low voltage and avert further loss to the consumers.
They also demanded reduction in the hours of loadshedding and requested Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed and Power Minister Chaudhry Arshad Hussain to take notice of the situation.
No spokesperson from the local electricity department was available to comment on the issue. However, an official of the department, who requested to remain anonymous, assured that the problem will be resolved soon.
He said that electricity supply poles have been installed in Waliabad and other localities of Mian Muhammad town, adding that the department has moved to replace out-dated equipment including transformers to ensure “uninterrupted and proper” supply of electricity to the consumers.
