Giggs confident of United comeback
Former champions look to fight back after Everton loss.
LONDON:
Ryan Giggs admits Manchester United must deliver an immediate response against Fulham after opening their Premier League title challenge with a lacklustre defeat at Everton.
Champions Manchester City underlined their determination to hold onto the title with a come-from-behind win over Southampton. Chelsea, inspired by new signing Eden Hazard, swept to the top of the table with wins over Wigan and Reading but Sir Alex Ferguson’s United are pointless thanks to their tepid display at Goodison Park.
However, Giggs is confident the Everton defeat will serve as a wake-up call.
“It wasn’t a nice feeling to lose the title last season, but it was the manner in which we lost it which was tough to take,” said Giggs. “I’m sure if we put that effort in again and get that bit of luck then we’ll go that extra step.
“The Robin van Persie signing sends out a big message. And it’s great when a player comes out and says he wants to come to the club as well.”
Ferguson could hand van Persie his first start, while Jonny Evans should return from injury to ease United’s defensive injury crisis.
Ferguson rules out further signings
Meanwhile, the United manager has ruled out any more summer signings and insists time is running out for any player looking to leave.
He insisted that there will be no more incoming players. And time is also running out for Dimitar Berbatov, who is trying to seal a move away following the arrival of Robin van Persie.
“We definitely won’t be buying anyone else, that’s for sure. There’s no movement I can tell you about. There’s only a few days left to the deadline and it will all pass quickly.”
