KARACHI:

Former fast-bowler Jalaluddin has termed the appointment of Mohammad Akram as Pakistan’s bowling coach a contradiction to the board’s requirements.

The board was looking at a Level-IV qualified coach and the coach-hunt committee chief Intikhab Alam stressed on the importance of having five-year experience in international cricket - Akram ticks neither boxes.

“People should ask Intikhab how Akram fulfils the criteria of being the bowling coach,” Jalaluddin told The Express Tribune.  “Once again, appointments have been influenced and personal favours have been made.”

Jalauddin added that no interviews were held with regards to the appointment before adding that Akram did not even have county coaching experience.

“Akram can’t even make his point if there’s a gathering of highly qualified coaches.”

Meanwhile, Zaheer Abbas, who was part of the
committee, confirmed that Akram was appointed because preferred choices refused to commit for the time-period that the PCB wanted them for.

“The other options we were looking at were not available and since we couldn’t get a level-IV coach, we had to appoint Akram,” said Zaheer before adding that the former fast-bowler has the ability to do well.
